Michael Bates

Member of the House of Lords

Michael has been an appointed member of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom since 2008. Previously, he served as an elected member of the House of Commons. He has served in several ministerial roles, including HM Paymaster General in the Cabinet Office, Minister of State in the Home Office, and Minister of State at the Department for International Development. Michael has also served as the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Ethiopia and as a Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords.

Before joining the House of Lords, Michael worked as the Director of Research and Consultancy for Oxford Analytica, a firm specialising in geopolitical risk analysis.

Michael holds Master’s degrees from the universities of Oxford, London School of Economics and Winchester. He is currently completing his PhD on ‘Great Powers and the International Nuclear Weapons Order’ at the School of Government and International Affairs, University of Durham.

Michael has undertaken several major walks to promote peace and reconciliation, covering over 11,000 miles in 32 countries. The walks have highlighted causes such as the Olympic truce, the world’s oldest peace treaty and have raised over £500,000 for charity. He serves on the Board of the International Olympic Truce Centre in Athens and is the co-founder of the Walk for Peace Foundation.
