Dr Meir Javedanfar is an Iranian – Israeli lecturer, author, and commentator. He has been teaching Iranian politics at Reichman University in Israel since 2012. Since 2021, he has also been teaching the “Political Economy of the Middle East” course, at the same university.

He is the co-author of Ahmadinejad’s biography “The Nuclear Sphinx of Tehran,” published in 4 languages. He has published many articles on Iran and Iran-related matters for publications such as Foreign Affairs, Al Monitor, The Diplomat, The Guardian and others. He has given lectures at over 20 universities. His Ph.D thesis dealt with Mohammad Reza Shah’s security decision-making in relation to threats posed by Iraq and the Soviet Union.

Meir speaks Persian, English, Hebrew, Spanish and Portuguese.

Israel’s Iran options after the 12-day war

Any sign that Iran is rebuilding its nuclear and missile programme would likely push Israeli decision makers to order the next major attack against targets in Iran. But this would require the consent of the Trump administration, writes Meir Javedanfar. The Israeli government considers its ability to get Trump to join the war in June a considerable accomplishment and will unlikely want to sacrifice this achievement by angering Trump, especially as the next US-Israel military-assistance MOU is up for renegotiation.

The election of Masoud Pezeshkian as Iran’s new president in July was met with little enthusiasm in Israel. Meir Javedanfar writes that, in a post-7 October world, the Iranian president’s policy on Israel could impact his desire for improved relations with the West and, in turn, undermine his domestic priorities and a potential nuclear deal.
