Joël Naoki Christoph is a French-Japanese economist and policy researcher working on the governance of emerging technologies and their implications for international and economic security. He is a Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and coordinates a graduate programme on existential risks.
His research examines how economic mechanisms and multilateral institutions can strengthen oversight of advanced AI and foster cooperation among states, particularly between Europe and Asia. He has designed and led international courses on AI governance, and is the founder of 10Billion.org, an initiative for global public goods.
Joël has conducted research at the Centre for the Governance of AI and Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute, and consulted for the World Bank and the International Energy Agency. He contributes to nuclear risk reduction through International Student/Young Pugwash and Pugwash Working Groups, and through work with Hibakusha survivors supported by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A former World Economic Forum Global Shapers Curator and a Salzburg Global Fellow, Joel has undertaken peace work across all continents. He speaks eight languages.
