Ambassador Jaakko Blomberg was a former career diplomat.
He joined the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1974 and served in a number of positions, including at the United Nations, New York, 1978-82, as Ambassador to Canada, Ottawa 1985-88, as Political Director and Under-Secretary for Political Affairs in the MFA 1988-2001, and as an Ambassador in Tallinn 2001-05. From 2005-7, he acted as a Special Adviser on the Question of Cyprus to Mr Olli Rehn, Commissioner responsible for enlargement at the time.
It is with regret that we learned of Ambassador Blomberg’s passing in December 2025, aged 83.
