A former EU diplomat, Ivo Walinga is a researcher and advisor specializing in East Asia’s foreign policy, security, and political economy.
He currently works as Research Fellow at the British think-tank Asia House from Seoul, where he researches the regional dynamics and green transition of China, Japan, and South Korea. In addition, he is a Yenching Scholar at Peking University, studying China’s evolving role in Asian security and trade, Chinese diplomacy, and the Cold War history of Asia.
Ivo has also worked on the politics of Eurasia more broadly, serving at the EU Delegations in Russia and in Mongolia and advising Central Asian governments on energy, trade, and climate policy at the OSCE. He has lived in various Chinese regions and conducted fieldwork on Sino-European relations from Shanghai, Kunming, Wuhan, and Hangzhou.
Ivo Walinga holds degrees from Oxford, Sciences Po Paris, and University College Utrecht and is fluent in Mandarin, Russian, and French next to his native Dutch and Bulgarian.
