Frank Ledwidge

Senior Lecturer in War Studies at Portsmouth University

Frank Ledwidge practised as a barrister before operational tours in the Balkans and Iraq as a reserve military intelligence officer. He retired as head of his military branch in 2008.  He spent five years with the Kosovo and Albania OSCE field missions and then a further three years with ODIHR as a senior rule of law officer holding the anti-torture and criminal law development briefs. He went on to jobs in ‘security and justice’ in Afghanistan, Libya and more recently Ukraine for the UK Government.  Since completing a PhD in 2015, he has taught war studies to British and overseas senior military officers, lecturing all over the world. He is the author of several well-received books on contemporary warfare and has been a regular commentator on warfare in national and international media.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
