Join the European Leadership Network’s efforts to advance nuclear policy and engage internationally within the multilateral system toward the public good! The ELN has hosted insightful events at previous Preparatory Committees (PrepComs) and Review Conferences (RevCons), and this year, we are excited to present two key events addressing critical topics. Join us at the upcoming sessions to learn more about our initiatives and connect with our network of experts.

Event Details:

Our ongoing network-led and multi-year project supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs focuses on enhancing and protecting the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), helping to identify pathways to success on the eleventh review cycle.

Event 1: Diminishing the Role and Significance of Nuclear Weapons: Ways Forward
  • Date: Monday, 22 July 2024
  • Time: 13:15 to 14:30 CEST (light lunch provided from 12:30)
  • Location: Room XXV, Palais des Nations, Geneva

Despite commitments made at the 2010 NPT Review Conference to reduce the role and salience of nuclear weapons, progress has stalled, and nuclear threats are on the rise. Our focus is on preserving the multilateral nuclear non-proliferation regime and preventing the erosion of the nuclear taboo and NPT. This event, featuring project and Network participants, will delve into the current landscape, responsibilities, and actionable steps for reducing the salience of nuclear weapons, including the role of nuclear-weapons states and other stakeholders ahead of the 2026 Review Conference.

Event 2: Guardrails and Self-Assessment (GSA) Framework for Emerging and Disruptive Technologies (EDTs)
  • Date: Tuesday, 23 July 2024
  • Time: 13:15 to 14:30 CEST (light lunch provided from 12:30)
  • Location: Room XXVII, Palais des Nations, Geneva

In collaboration with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this multiyear partnership explores the impacts of emerging technologies on nuclear decision-making and mitigating risks of misunderstanding and unintended escalation. This event will present a new Guardrails and Self-Assessment (GSA) Framework designed to guide EDT use, reduce risks, and align with NPT objectives, based on a series of workshops with experts and officials with an aim to integrate EDT considerations responsibly.
